How to install LED Neon Flex lighting
If you’re looking to create impactful signage or exciting décor for your business or home, LED Neon Flex lighting is a great option.
After buying your LED Neon Flex, it needs to be installed, so we’ve provided all the information you need to make installation quick and easy. Neon Flex is an excellent replacement for traditional glass neon signs and, when installed properly, can look incredible for years.
In this guide you will find information on:
What you’ll need
Before installing your lighting, gather all the tools and parts you’ll need.
Neon Flex tube
The most important item is the LED Neon Flex tube itself.
This will be a light tube in your chosen shape, length and colour, ready to be manipulated into your project. Installing your own Neon Flex can save on costs and is relatively straightforward.
Accessories for installation
Next, you’ll need installation accessories such as a power end cap and an end cap. These provide the start point and the power source for your Neon Flex lighting.
For outdoor use, consider adding silicone sealant around joints and using mounting clips to improve protection against moisture.
Power supply
You will need a 12 V or 24 V power supply. Often these are included with your Neon Flex kit, but sometimes a power cable is purchased separately.
LED Neon Flex uses low power—never more than a 24 V connection is required.
Tools
You may need an electric drill (for mounting onto hard or brick surfaces), a screwdriver, sharp scissors, wire strippers, hooks, clips, and any other mounting materials you choose.
Installing your LED Neon Flex light
Once you have all the necessary items, follow these steps to install your LED Neon Flex:
Step 1: Cut to length
If your Neon Flex hasn’t been pre-cut, use sharp scissors to trim at the horizontal dashed lines on the back of the tube. Cutting precisely on these marks ensures you don’t damage the internal wires.
Step 2: Attach power pin and end cap
After cutting, you’ll see two exposed wires. Align the power pin (with attached cable and pin) over these wires and push it in until it clicks. Then attach the female end of the power cord to this power pin. Finally, fit an end cap on the opposite end of the strip.
Step 3: Water- and dust-proof connections
Even for indoor projects, it’s best to seal all connection points. Apply a bead of silicone sealant around each joint and slide mounting clips over exposed areas. This helps prevent moisture or dust ingress. Note that once sealed, altering the strip later becomes difficult.
Step 4: Shape and mount
Shape and mount your Neon Flex using mounting clips or hooks. You can pin it directly to a wall for a retro look, recess it into a panel for a sleek finish, or install it against a plain backdrop so it stands out. For outdoor installations, be sure to include a weatherproof enclosure or suitable junction box for the power supply.
What to remember during installation
Although easier than glass neon, keep these points in mind:
- Always keep the strip facing outward with no twists—twisting breaks the even light spread and can damage the tube.
- Avoid sharp bends; use gentle curves to prevent damage. Complex designs may require creating a template or consulting a professional.
- Verify you’re using the correct power supply and voltage, and double-check all connections before powering up.
Follow these steps and your LED Neon Flex installation will look stunning and last for years—whether it’s for a restaurant sign, home accent, or retail display.
