Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right LED strip voltage (12V or 24V)?
Choose 12V LED strips for shorter runs and compact installs; choose 24V for longer lengths with reduced voltage drop and fewer power feeds. Both require a constant-voltage driver matched to the strip voltage.
Can I cut LED strip lights to size?
Yes, LED strips can be cut at designated cutting marks (usually every 25mm, 50mm, or 100mm depending on the strip). Look for the scissor symbols or copper pads. Always cut through the centre of the copper pads for proper connection.
How many metres can I run in one continuous length?
With power attached from one end, typically 5m for 12V strips and 10m for 24V strips without significant brightness drop. For longer runs, power from both ends or inject power at intervals. COB strips may have different limits - check your specific product.
Are LED strip lights waterproof?
Yes - but only if you choose the correct IP rating. IP65 (silicone coating) for bathrooms or covered outdoor areas. IP67 or IP68 (silicone sleeve) for direct weather exposure or underwater use. Higher IP ratings may slightly reduce brightness.
Which IP rating do I need indoors?
IP20 for dry indoor areas.
What's the difference between SMD, COB, and CSP LED strips?
SMD strips have individual LED chips visible as dots. COB (Chip-on-Board) strips provide dot-free continuous light, ideal for visible installations. CSP strips offer the highest efficiency and light quality. Choose based on your application and budget.

How to Choose the Right LED Strip Lights

Selecting the right LED strip lights comes down to brightness, voltage (12V or 24V), colour type and whether your installation requires indoor or moisture protection. The options below help you quickly choose the most suitable strip for signage, retail displays, events, kitchens, ceilings and creative home projects.

Strip Type Best For Key Benefits
12V LED Strip Lights Small signage, letters, props and short runs Easy to cut, flexible installation, ideal for compact projects
24V LED Strip Lights Longer runs and commercial installations Reduced voltage drop, longer continuous lengths, consistent brightness
COB LED Strip Lights Retail displays, shelving, dot-free lighting Smooth continuous light, high CRI, premium finish
RGB LED Strip Lights Colour-changing effects, signage, events Full RGB control, vibrant colours, creative flexibility
IP65 / IP67 Waterproof LED Strips Kitchens, bathrooms, sheltered outdoor areas Moisture-resistant protection for damp environments

Choosing 12V vs 24V LED Strip Lights

12V LED strip lights are best suited to shorter runs and smaller installations where tighter cutting points are required. For longer runs or commercial projects, 24V LED strip lights help maintain brightness by reducing voltage drop. For a deeper explanation, see our guide to LED strip voltage options.

Power Supplies and Connectors

All LED strip lights require a compatible power supply. Always match the voltage (12V or 24V) and allow at least 20% additional wattage to ensure safe, reliable operation. Browse our full range of LED power supplies to build a dependable system. For quick, clean joins and corners, pair your strip with LED strip connectors.

Common Applications for LED Strip Lighting

LED strip lighting is widely used for under-cabinet kitchen lighting, ceiling coving and recessed features, retail merchandising displays, illuminated signage and lettering, and home projects such as shelving, media units and gaming setups.
