12V LED strip is the go-to choice for most standard installations. Lower voltage means safer handling, compatibility with a wide range of drivers and controllers, and straightforward installation for both trade and DIY. Is 12V LED Strip Right for Your Project?

12V is the most common LED strip voltage and suits the majority of standard installations. It's the right choice for cabinet lighting, bedroom and living room accent lighting, display cases, shorter signage runs, and anywhere the total strip length stays under around 5 metres per run. Beyond that, voltage drop can become a factor — for longer runs, 24V LED strip will give more consistent brightness end to end.

Types of 12V LED Strip

Single-colour white – Available in warm white (2700–3000K), natural white (4000K) and cool white (6000–6500K). The straightforward choice for task lighting, under-cabinet lighting and general illumination.

COB LED strip – Chip-on-board technology places hundreds of tiny LEDs directly on the strip substrate, producing a smooth continuous line of light with no individual dots or hotspots. Ideal for channel letters, feature lighting and anywhere the strip itself is visible.

RGB & RGBW – Colour-changing strip for decorative, retail and creative applications. RGB gives millions of colour combinations; RGBW adds a dedicated white channel for cleaner, brighter whites. Requires a compatible RGB controller.

Waterproof (IP65–IP67) – Silicone-sleeved or resin-filled strip for bathrooms, outdoor installations and anywhere moisture is a risk. Always match the IP rating to the environment.

Power Supplies for 12V LED Strip

Every 12V LED strip installation needs a regulated 12V DC power supply. Calculate your total strip wattage, then select a driver with at least 20% headroom — a 50W load needs a minimum 60W driver.
