A guide to LED connectors
LED technology has changed the way lighting works and looks by converting electrical energy input into lights of changeable colours. LEDs don't emit heat or noise, proving to be one of the most energy-efficient lighting solutions available today. This means they provide endless potential for modern lighting projects.
If you have decided to use LED lighting for a project, you might want to know more about the elements you'll need to finish your lighting display. LED connectors are an important part of your LED lighting so it's important to understand what they are and which type you're likely to need.
In this article, we will explore the different types of LED connectors available to help you understand which connector you might need for your LED lighting display.

Splice connectors
LED splice connectors are small plastic clips designed to form swift spliced connections between multiple pieces of wire. In its construction, there is a sharp metal insert so that you can safely split the insulating jackets surrounding wires and crimp them together, forming a splice connection.
The splice connector snaps to hold these two crimped wires securely in place, forming a connection without the need to use soldering techniques.
Not only is the splice connector cheap and easy for quick use but it is also often safer than soldering equipment which can produce heat and harmful toxins. More convenient than its alternative, splice connectors are versatile and sold in large packages.
WeLoveLEDs offers a comprehensive range including the innovative T1 and T2 splice connectors that require no wire stripping or soldering. We also stock professional-grade equivalents to 3M Scotchlok connectors, including UY2_WLL and UR2_WLL connectors that provide moisture-resistant connections for demanding applications.
Push/pull connectors
Designed specifically to eliminate the risk of accidental disconnections, especially in critical situations, the push/pull connectors engage a strong self-latching mechanism in the LED strip to mate the connector by pushing on the socketed plug.
Accidental pulling of the connection will not break it. Only by squeezing on the connector body can the connection be broken. By using axial force instead of the standard rotational force, push/pull connectors are a great choice for critical lighting displays under high pressure such as military, medical and instrumentation applications.
At WeLoveLEDs, you'll find a wide range of top-quality push/pull connectors including DC power sockets designed for flush mounting to panels, waterproof connectors for outdoor applications, and various adaptor options. These connectors are perfect for professional LED installations where reliability is paramount.
Clamp connectors
Constructed with careful cage clamps within the connector block, clamp connectors are designed to lever-pinch LED wires together without the need for soldering. With a single-pole communing terminal, clamp connectors are able to form connections between two or more cables.
Our lever cage clamp connectors are transparent and reusable, suitable for 0.14-4mm² cables. Available in convenient packs of 10, 25, 50, or 100, these connectors work with solid, stranded, and flexible cables. The integrated lever mechanism makes them incredibly easy to use whilst providing secure, reliable connections.
These connectors are perfect for LED module installations where multiple connections need to be made quickly and securely without the complexity of traditional terminal blocks.
Strip connectors
Manufactured to safely connect multiple wires, strip connectors facilitate the secure connection of LED strip lights between circuits. They can be used across domestic, industrial and commercial lighting applications and in environments where multiple connections are required at the same time.
Available in both a single clasp and a double clasp wire, the strip connectors are designed for securing efficient connections between strips of LEDs and multiple circuits. Both options come with 150mm of wire and are rated for 8A, making them suitable for most LED strip applications.
An LED light strip is a fantastically versatile lighting solution. LED strips can be connected together for large-scale lighting displays and are used by a variety of industries because of their flexibility. When it comes to connecting several of these strips, the most effective method is by using the strip connectors.
Connectors are designed to clamp onto the end of the strip with two prongs that line up with the positive and negative output/inputs. The plastic housing unit then clasps securely around the tape.
Wire adaptors
Wire adaptors function as connection points for multiple wire-terminated connectors, making combinations of housed wires in the port level connection unit. Stripped wires are threaded into the ports where the lever snaps down to secure it in place within the housing chamber.
From this, a wire extension lead with socket and plug jack extends and plugs into an additional electrical connector, mains socket plug or computer connector. This gives the wire adaptor lots of versatility and is ideal for situations where multiple separate LED leads require power or computer integration.
These wire adaptors rely on both electrical and mechanical specifications so it's vital to always check the specification of your LED display. Our wire adaptors include various DC power adaptors, both male and female options, and extension leads with different current ratings to suit various voltage requirements from 5v to 24v systems.
Micro connector systems
To form a secure and efficient connection to an extension lead, an LED lighting display needs a supply lead of either input or output connection point.
Our micro connector systems are available in both input and output configurations. We also offer 2-way and 6-way distributors that can convert the output to input and even offer switch sockets for enhanced control.
Micro connector systems are vital for multi-cable LED lighting displays where you will need to rely on longer cables and extension leads. These systems are specifically designed for 24V applications and come in both single-colour and RGB configurations, making them perfect for complex lighting installations that require organised cable management.
Installation tips and best practices
When working with LED connectors, always ensure you match the correct voltage and current ratings. For RGB and RGBW applications, pay special attention to colour coding to ensure proper functionality.
Consider using cable management accessories alongside your connectors for professional installations. Our range includes spacers, cable clips, and heat shrink tubing to complement your connector choices.
